Writing

Our first graders are growing as writers!  This week we started up a new writing piece about cooking.  Today students drew a picture of something they like to cook or bake.  Then we met with partners to discuss the drawings.  This gives the first graders a chance to verbally organize their thoughts.  Tomorrow we will work on filling in the prewriting web.
Parents often ask; How should I help my child spell?

In class we use

  1. The "tap it out" method (sound it out)
  2. Our class word wall
  3. Picture dictionaries
I would encourage you to let your child tap out unknown words.  Students in class are comfortable with tapping out words.  We are working on using the word wall more in class.  To get the students more familiar with the word wall, we have been playing a word wall game called Guess My Secret Word Wall Word.  I give the students 3 clues to figure out my secret word.
When this writing piece is finished I will use a rubric to grade the piece.  The rubric will be the same one used to assess the Thanksgiving writing piece.  If you have any questions, please e-mail me!
